When you're in the repair business, you deal with a lot of different manufacturers that offer a wide range of parts, often differing in quality and price from the next manufacturer.

How do you know you're getting a good part?

The simple answer? It depends.

Not all parts are created equal. A lot of parts are remanufactured or rebuilt, but each manufacturer has a different definition of what exactly that entails. Some manufacturers replace only gaskets, preventing the part from leaking when installed. Some manufacturers go the extra mile and do a complete rebuild of all moving parts including bearings, roller pins, pistons, impellers, etc. The way it should be!

Unfortunately, there is no quick and easy way to determine what a quality part is. Often times price can be an indicator, but not always. The same can be said for warranties. Some of the best parts have better warranties, but there are also "Lifetime Warranty" parts that you can almost guarantee will fail within years, sometimes months.

So how do I protect myself against bad parts?

You hire the right people to repair your vehicle. Any repair shop worth it's salt will carry a warranty against any repairs they handle. We, as repair shops, must often eat the cost of a bad part in order to take care of the customer when something fails. If you've selected the right repair shop, you won't have a pay a dime out of pocket when that part fails.
