Winter Creates Leaks

It’s a cold winter morning, and you’re running late for work. You start your car, brush the snow off the windshield, and hop in to head to work.


Only something has changed… you don’t have heat! What happened?


Winter creates leaks. That’s right. Your car and truck gets cold just like you do.


Why are leaks “created” in the winter?

Your car is made up of a mass of materials like aluminum, steel, rubber, plastic, etc. Each of these materials moves, bends, and flexes under differing degrees of strain and temperature. It is by the process of thermodynamics that vacuum leaks, coolant leaks, and other issues may first present themselves. Winter cold always helps to speed things along.


  • Rubber o-rings and seals lose elasticity and shrink, “creating” areas of leaks due to their inability to seal out fluids. Often times, these seals are already on their way out, but the cold temperature is just enough to make it a real problem.


  • Aluminum and steel are also susceptible to thermal contraction, a process where the metals physically shrink and flex due to frigid temperatures. Surfaces that move and contract are not easily sealed, especially against old and deteriorated seals and gaskets.


  • Lack of fluid and oil creates big issues down the road. When your vehicle leaks coolant, not only do you lose heat from your vents, but your engine loses it’s ability to maintain it’s temperature, eventually leading to overheating.
